January - Digital Citizenship - Internet Safety
I am teaching all students this lesson in January 2021. Parents and Students - please use these resources to help you and your family be safe when using digital resources. Tips and ideas for families to help kids make friends & interact safely online: English Spanish Chinese (second page) Tips and ideas for families to help fight cyberbullying & other mean online behavior: English Spanish Chinese (second page) November 2020: School Days - Parenting Tips
School days are some of the most important days of our life. Besides academics, the life lessons learned during these years help us develop the necessary skills. Day in and day out, competence and confidence develop – we learn and change some more. All of these set the stage for strength and even satisfaction in our life. During the elementary years, students are learning how they best learn. As they learn to maneuver successfully through their education – they start figuring our how their own brain works and how to stimulate it to gain higher learning and development. This happens as students work consistently hard every day. It happens as they have success and yes – even failure, adjust, reset, and try again. As parents, we can encourage our kids in their education by showing support, belief in their abilities, and keeping our expectations at the high end of their ability. Making sure our kids know that we highly value education sets them up for success. Talk often about your expectations and the value of education for their life. Along with that, some of the most essential social skills of our lives are learned in the elementary years. Students learn to build friendships, to manage conflict, to give and take, to trust others, to be honest, and to do things they don’t necessarily want to do (but learn that they still can). As parents, do your best to allow these social skills to develop naturally. Do not be tempted to interrupt the process. As much as we sometimes want to step in and fix problems for them – generally it is not a good idea. A little pain and discomfort can be incredibly powerful in teaching solid life lessons and skills. 9/1/19 Hello Fabulous Foothill Elementary Families,
My name is Mrs. Dinsdale and I am excited to join Foothill Elementary staff as the school counselor this year. I’ve enjoyed getting to know your students and want them to be as successful as possible at school. Success in school is not just about reading and math. It is also about knowing how to get along with others. This year we are using the Second Step program in your child’s classroom and school-wide to teach these critical skills.
The Second Step program teaches skills in the following four areas:
1. Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how
to focus their attention, listen carefully, and be assertive when asking for help
with schoolwork.
2. Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others’
feelings, how to take another’s perspective, and how to show compassion.
3. Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when
experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger.
4. Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in
a positive way.

Our Community Resources
According to the The American School Counselor Association, "Elementary school counselors are educators uniquely trained in child development, learning strategies, self-management, and social skills, who understand and promote success for today’s diverse students. They implement a school counseling program to support students through this important developmental period. The program provides education, prevention and intervention activities, which are integrated into all aspects of children’s lives. The program teaches knowledge, attitudes and skills students need to acquire in academic, career and social/emotional development, which serve as the foundation for future success."
